Every year, in June, the LGBTQ community celebrates many ways across the globe.
Various events are held, many awareness programmes run across the world.
What is LGBT/Gay pride?
It is a movement started by the LGBT community to celebrate their diverse people including Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender. It is a way to protest against discrimination and violence against their community. It promotes their dignity, equal rights and it increases the awareness of the general public.
When did it start?
On June 28, 1969, police raided a place in New York City, the Stonewall Inn. It was a Gay bar and began hauling customers outside. However, because of that the tension uprises as the patrons resisted arresting and the people started to throw bottles and many towards the police. The Gay community fed up with the harassment from the authorities and started riots continuing for three days.
However, with this, the Gay Liberation Front and Gay Activists Alliance were formed. With many struggles with the authorities and meetings with the Political leaders, the first Gay pride marches after a year of Stonewall riots.
In 2016, the area around the Stonewall designated as a national monument and still popular around the world.
How does the LGBTQ flag form?
In 1978, the designer Gilbert Baker was commissioned by the San Fransisco city supervisor, also, the first openly gay elected US official, to make a flag for the city's upcoming Pride celebrations.
Baker designed the rainbow flag to represent the various groups within the gay community.
What is the purpose of these pride celebrations?
The main purpose of the pride gatherings is to raise political awareness about the current issues. And also to improve confidence among the people of their community.
There are many street parties, awareness programmes, community events and many more.
All of these events are covered by mainstream media and will attract millions of people around the world.
However, the New York pride parade is one of the largest parades of this community. It will follow up around 500,000 people around the community and also it celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.
Same as the last years, this year also they celebrate the pride in a very colourful way with their rainbow flags and colours.
